Overview
Low, mostly neglible costs for message transfer on the internet resulted in a high increase of SPAM-Emails like unrequested advertisments.
Meanwhile the SPAM rate has reached proportions that decrease the benefit of the medium Email greatly. SPAM-filters are supposed to get the
amount of SPAM under control.
Voice over IP (VOIP) relocates telephony to the internet promising cost savings. Experts predict an increase of the so called "SPIT"
(SPAM over internet telephony) with a growing usage and distribution of VOIP. SPIT-filters are the equivalent to SPAM-filters and thus
supposed to reduce and even prevent SPIT.
Officially supported by e-Region PLUS the local internet provider TNG - THE NET GENERATION AG and the "Unabhängige Landeszentrum für Datenschutz Schleswig-Holstein" established the project SPIT-AL (SPIT defense solutions) trying to find a solution for a ready to use SPIT-filter according to existing law. Depending on call identification the callee has several options like rejecting the call, receiving the call, redirecting the call to a voice box, dismissing the call to an alternative number with costs etc. This does not only protect the callee from unwanted calls but additionally supports his reachability management.
Interesting in the context of existing laws are current standards of telelecommunication law and data privacy law as well as laws regarding teleservices, penology and administrative laws. Principles like a high degree of transparency and user controlled costs must be considerd when developing a SPIT defense solution.
The SPIT-AL project is being supported by a support program of the regional government (e-Region PLUS) using the European fond for regional development (EFRE) in addition to financial fonds of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
